On each of the five identical stamps  ceramics Tegelen is a detail of one of the ceramic pieces from Tegelen that are depicted on the stamp derived.

Ceramics from Tegelen and Loosdrecht

For these stamps, designer Rutger Fuchs searched for special details that are so characteristic of these ceramic cities. Fuchs found this in Tegelen in a ceramic item of the young boy with a bird cage in his right hand and a bird in the left. “Here you see how many different techniques the Tegelen ceramic painters had mastered.”

Fuchs found the characteristic Loosdrecht porcelain element in the beautiful depiction of the branch with pink-red roses and green leaves. “The craftsmanship of the Loosdrecht porcelain painters emerges in the subtle colour shading.”

Together with Gracia Lebbink, Rutger Fuchs had previously designed the book series, Delft pottery: history of a national product, for The Hague Municipal Museum and publisher Waanders.

The City’s First Electric Cinema Theatre Now Serves As Its Philatelic Bureau But Little Is Being Done To Restore The Structure

image

Heritage buildings aren't just pretty structures they're testimony to the traditions of a time past and to outstanding workmanship.Without a legal framework to protect them, were in danger of losing these stories of our roots

Its close to 100 years since the quaint red and white building, now housing the Philatelic Bureau on Anna Salai, was bought by the Postal and Telegraph Department after Warwick Major closed the city's first electric theatre that operated there.Either way, nothing on campus marks the milestone.

A plaque says the building was constructed in 1900 by Warwick Major as an electric theatre and that it was the first ever cinema house in south India. This building was bought by the P&T Department. For many years it housed the Mount Road Post Office, it reads.

There is little to peddle its cause from the outside: Experts describe it as a typical colonial office building, whose character has been changed extensively for practical purposes. Its old,but not too old. And,the buildings historical significance is greater than its architectural importance, said S Suresh of INTACH.In its heydays, the bureau one of the oldest in the country was among the biggest.Chennai has a long and vibrant philatelic tradition, said Suresh. With interest in philately waning, the bureau has lost much of its significance.

Today is death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Philatelic Tributes to the Father of Nation !!

30th January is observed as Martyrs’ Day. It is the date observed at the national level. The date was chosen as it marks the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1948. On Martyr’s Day the president, the vice president, the prime minister, the defence minister, and the three Service Chiefs gather at the samadhi at Raj Ghat memorial and lay wreaths decorated with multi-colour flowers. The armed forces personnel blow bugles sounding the Last Post. The inter-services contingent reverse arms as a mark of respect. A two-minute silence in memory of the Father of the Nation and other martyrs is observed throughout the country at 11 AM. Participants hold all-religion prayers and sing tributary bhajan.

Dharasana Satyagraha was a protest against the British salt tax in colonial India in May, 1930. Following the conclusion of the Salt March to Dandi, Mahatma Gandhi chose a non-violent raid of the Dharasana Salt Works in Gujarat as the next protest against British rule. Hundreds of satyagrahis were beaten by soldiers under British command at Dharasana. The ensuing publicity attracted world attention to the Indian independence movement and brought into question the legitimacy of British rule in India.

200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner

image

Date of Issue : 28 January 2014

The US Postal Service issued a new Forever stamp on 28th January in commemoration of 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner . This sparkling stamp features  Flag and  firework . The First Day postmark also features a cracker.

The Star-Spangled Banner Stamps feature a treasured American icon ever since Francis Scott Key celebrated the sight of an American flag still flying over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.
This stamp commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner with a photograph of the flag that flies over Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore. This flag is a replica of the one that inspired Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner” after Fort McHenry withstood the British attack of September 13-14, 1814.

image

Commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner with this The Star-Spangled Banner Digital Color Postmarks (#6 3/4 envelope) bearing an affixed The Star-Spangled Banner Forever® stamp. The color postmark shows celebratory red fireworks falling over the stamp title, which is printed in blue and gold type and resembles antique wood-block lettering. Also included are the date and location of stamp issuance.

Photographer Gary Clark took the picture of the flag against a backdrop of fireworks during an annual celebration of Defenders' Day. Defenders' Day, according to the National Park Service, is “Baltimore's oldest holiday commemorating the bombardment of Fort McHenry and the writing of 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'” Clark said it was a challenge to get the fireworks and the flag in the same shot and that “the wind picked up quite a bit that night.” Art director Phil Jordan designed the stamp.
The Star-Spangled Banner stamps are being issued as Forever® stamps in double-sided booklets of 20 stamps and in self-adhesive coils of 100 stamps. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail® one-ounce rate.

New stamps on Year of Horse….

image image

Here is new  stamp  on the Year of the Horse from Serbia. The first stamp shown above is one of the best stamps on year of horse stamps issued so far. The design is exquisite.

The year 2014, as the Year of the Horse covers the period from 31st January 2014 to 28th February 2015. The 2014. is the Year of the Wood Horse. The last Year of the Horse was in 1954 as the repetition cycle of the same combination of sign and element occurs every 60 years. The Year of the Horse occurs every 12 years but the Year of the Wood Horse every 60 years.

That’s why all the people born in 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 should work on what they really want, because in 2014 it will be easier to accomplish than usual.

General characteristics of people born under the sign of the Horse are: activity, energy, independence, freedom loving, have style and good taste, give all for love. Patience is not their strong suit. He wants to wildly gallop towards the obstacles, without looking neither left nor right. The Wood Horse is as volatile as the other Horse, but it has better control, and better sense of discipline and is ready for reasonable discussion.

Delicacies from Taiwan…

image

Chunghwa Post is issuing a set of four stamps, featuring popular gift-packaged desserts. Each stamp is denominated at NT$5.

The designs follow:

1. Pineapple Shortcrust Pastry: the aromatic and soft skin of this pastry is made of shortcrust pastry dough, butter, eggs, and sugar. The filling comes in a wide variety, the most common being white gourd and pineapple jams. This dessert promises a party in the mouth. For the people of Taiwan, the pastry’s popularity transcends time and age.

2. Mochi: made of glutinous rice, the dessert is savory and chewy. Plain mochi is eaten with a coat of redolent, powdered peanut. Or one can choose mochi with filling, which ranges from red bean, peanut, or sesame pastes, and is ubiquitously delicious. The dessert offers a multiplicity of texture.

3. Sun Cake: the filling of this time-honored pastry comprises maltose, with golden-crispy crusts. The crusts are flaky, rich and exquisite; the maltose, on the other hand, leaves a sweet, addictive aftertaste.

4. Egg Yolk Pastry: The red bean or jujube paste is stuffed with a salty, delectable egg yolk. The filling is then tucked into rich, full-flavored pastry crust. A pinch of sesame is sprinkled on the dessert. The combination of sweetness and saltiness is absolutely ambrosial.
